Christmas in Golfo Aranci: journey through traditions and fun
During the Christmas holidays, Sardinia may not be the first destination that comes to mind, yet this wonderful land is a treasure trove of culinary traditions, legends and customs related to Christmas
Christmas traditions in Sardinia
During the 19th and 20th centuries, the Christmas period represented a crucial time for re-establishing family unity, especially when men were absent for tasks related to sheep farming or agriculture.
During this holiday, the central moment was Christmas Eve, called Sa notte 'e xena . Here, the fireplace became the fulcrum of family activities, giving off the heat necessary to combat the winter cold. A large log of wood, called Su truncu 'e xena or cotzina 'e xena , was prepared specifically for this occasion.
The Christmas dinner included typical dishes such as roast lamb or goat, cheeses and sausages obtained from domestic pigs. This preparation began days before Christmas night and, according to tradition, it was mandatory to consume all the prepared foods.
The evening continued with stories from the elders or traditional games such as su barrallicu , arrodedas de conca de fusu , Punta o Cù , cavaliers in potu , tòmbula , matzetu and set'è mesu in craru . Near midnight, the bells announced the start of the Christmas Mass, Sa Miss 'e puddu .
During this solemn service, the churches were lit by numerous candles and the atmosphere was characterized by great participation, although some women mourners did not participate until the first prayer of the following day.
In some cases, religious services were accompanied by noise and shooting, as happened at Christmas 1878, when one of those present fired a shot during the celebration, forcing the parish priest to end the mass early.
Although the Church had prohibited such behavior in the past, some specific traditions were particularly alive in some regions. In Bitti, for example, Su Nenneddu , a statue of Baby Jesus, was carried from house to house until the Epiphany, while in Orgosolo the children received small gifts and a special bread on New Year's Eve morning. Adults, however, visited newly married couples in the closing year.
Christmas Market and Santa Claus Village: what to do at Christmas in Golfo Aranci
The roots of millenary traditions have not prevented Sardinia from embracing the evolution of the times, creating events which, while maintaining links with the past, bring joy to both adults and children in a contemporary way. Golfo Aranci perfectly embodies this transition: among the initiatives of the modern era, the Christmas Market and its Santa Claus Village stand out, which transform this splendid seaside resort into an enchanting Christmas paradise every year. This magical atmosphere comes to life in the Angela Madeddu Public Park, from 10 December to 6 January.
A charming wooden cabin houses Santa Claus' post office, where children can meet the famous protagonist, take photos and deliver their letters. Not far away, the home of the Grinch, which joins this Christmas context, reminding us how positive and beautiful this holiday can reawaken, even in those who have lost the magic of Christmas.
Then there are the shows, which are the beating heart of this Village: local and national artists perform every day on the large thematic stage. Between stilt walkers, acrobats and dance schools, the evenings come alive with LED lights, fire magic and top quality entertainment. The program is always full of surprises, and the current edition is an example of this: from the inaugural parade with funky jazz music, to performances by circus artists such as the luminous angels of "Light Sensation Parade" and the "Christmas Parade" with elves and fairies of the forest, up to the performances of Andrea Paris, comedian and mentalist known for his presence in successful television programs and this year with Giovanni Cacioppo, well-known Zelig cabaret artist.
A wide range of engaging activities awaits visitors: from pony rides to fun inflatable games, from horse carriages to multi-games, creating an unforgettable experience. The elves and Christmas mothers in the inflatable houses offer creative workshops, face painting and fascinating Christmas fairy tales.
But that is not all! Local craftsmanship finds space in the Christmas Market, offering unique and authentic creations: souvenirs, art objects, ceramics, traditional fabrics and regional gastronomic delicacies. Sardinian craftsmanship is a precious testimony that embraces various techniques and materials inextricably linked to the local culture. Unique and refined objects take shape thanks to generations who have passed down the art of transforming wood, ceramics, fabrics and precious metals. Sardinian fabrics, such as carpets, tapestries and cushions, are made with the peculiar grain technique called Pibiones, known for their relief designs, and represent unique decorative elements for domestic environments. What better opportunity than this to give unique gifts to the people we love most?
The Golfo Aranci Christmas village welcomes visitors of all ages, transforming this experience into a pleasant activity for everyone. A true party retreat for all its guests.
